MARKING THE TEMPLATE

My personal preference is to draw up the entire block onto freezer paper. This gives me a template piece for each segment of the block.

You will take the freezer paper block and mark it with the following: (Please make sure you mark the block exactly as I have, this will make it much easier to follow along on the tutorial)

1. Number each piece of the block. This is the order in which you will lay the block out, not the order of piecing.

2. Write the color of the fabric you will be using. In this case W=White, R=Red, G=Gold, GR=Green and B=Blue. (Again, using the same colors as I have will make following the tutorial easier)

3. Registration Marks - If a seam does not line up with another seam, mark those areas with a registration mark. These are the red “v” shapes in the picture below. The use of registration marks is very essential to accurate piecing.

This is what your Freezer Paper Template will look like when you are done marking it:

You can now cut the pattern apart. Be sure to cut right on the line, not to the left or right of it.

Stack the pieces in color order. At this point I tuck the pieces into the folds of the fabrics so they don‘t accidentally blow away.

I also print out a colored pattern and number each piece. I use this as a reference in case I get myself confused along the way.
